“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me, will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Light has life-giving abilities, both in the natural world and in the spiritual world. The “bright morning star” is one name for the Sun. It is the one star that is sufficiently luminous and powerful to light the entire earth. Life would cease to exist in the physical world without the Sun’s light. You may remember that from your science classes in school!
Similarly, every person would be spiritually dead without the Son’s light. Jesus said “I am the Light of the World. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” Spiritually speaking, Jesus is “the bright morning star.” In declaring himself to be the Light of the World, Jesus was claiming that He is the most powerful and exclusive source of spiritual illumination and is the sole source of eternal life.
1 John 1:5 “God is light and there is absolutely no darkness in Him” No other source of spiritual truth is available to mankind.
We spend much of our time on earth groping in the dark trying to create our own life. We are self-centered and self-driven without Jesus. We pursue the things of the world to light up our life: money, our resumes, our status, our ambitions, our own good works. It’s all worthless when it owns our affections and governs our choices because they are the very things keeping us from following Jesus.
There are those “in the dark” who lack knowledge, having never heard about the one true God or Jesus Christ, His only Son. And there are many who have heard, but with willful blindness, outright reject the light and choose to dwell in darkness. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (John 1:5). Jesus’ words imply that until you’re willing to step out of the darkness and into the light, you’re not with Him.
The condition needed to bring light into your life is releasing all selfish, sinful, worldly ways and following Jesus. If we choose to not follow Him, we will not have this light, this truth, nor this eternal life.
1 John 1:7 “If we walk in the light as He Himself is in the Light; we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son cleanses us from all sin”.
Two promises are given in (John 8:12) for those who follow Jesus. First, His followers will never walk in darkness, which refers to the assurance of salvation we enjoy. As true followers of the light, we will never follow the ways of sin and darkness. Rather we repent of our sin, in order to stay close to the light of the world. The second promise is that we will have the light that leads to life. Just as He came as the Light of the World, he commands us to be “lights” too. How can we shine for God? Jesus says that “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14) and we are to let our lights shine before men in such a way that they will see our good works and glorify God (Matthew 5:16). When we live surrendered to the Lord, His light will shine through us, revealing and illuminating His love and truth to others! God takes ordinary people like us to share His message where it is dark and to people who need Him.
The beauty of it all is that every day is a new day, filled with new opportunities and a chance to start anew! Our Lord invites us to come out of the shadows of darkness, repent, and live as children of light (Ephesians 5:8). And when we do, Jesus illuminates the truth, and then our lives respond accordingly. Aligned with His Word, we become the masterpieces that reflect His perfect brilliance.
I thank the Lord for rescuing me from darkness and giving me new direction and purpose in my life. I encourage you to bring “light” into your life.
